What to do with your favorite images..... Decoupage!

de·cou·page also dé·cou·page  (dk-päzh)
n.
1. The technique of decorating a surface with cutouts, as of paper.
2. A creation produced by this technique.

Because I apparently will never have enough hobbies or ways to show my favorite photos and other art images I have started  painting and decoupaging  my photography images on trinket boxes. Decoupage is so simple and gives you wonderful and quick results. I have done 3 boxes so far. One as a custom order for a friend, one for myself with a Nightmare before Christmas image(not drawn by me but used with permission for personal use, never steal other peoples art and photography!) and the one I will show you today has one of my photos on it that has been manipulated with coral paint shop pro my editing software of choice. Decoupage is as easy as finding images you like and applying them to wood, glass, metal and other surfaces. Most likely you have everything you need in your home to do it. I like Mod Podge for the adhesive and sealer(it is what I use for collage and altered art), but I just picked up some Fast Finish Decoupage by Beacon which is suppose to dry faster and not be tacky so I will see how it works. On the Trinket box in the photo I used a photo safe acrylic sealer and not Mod Podge(Mod Podge is photo safe too) because I wanted a glossier finish and I only had matte Mod Podge in the house.

If you want to try Decoupage find some images you like. They can be from your own photos or images, cut outs from magazines, postcard or card, images from online. Always follow copyrights laws. As far as I know you can use most images for personal use as long as you do not take credit for the photo or artwork. But do not quote me on it as I am not copyright expert.
Find and item to Decoupage there is no limit here. It could be a plate, box, terra cotta, paper mache frames, vase, wood, metal, desk, table anything. The only thing to keep in mind is not all adhesives are good for all surfaces and materials.
I suggest pre arranging your cut out/s how you want them first then apply with your Fast Finish , Mod Podge or another adhesive, even white school glue should give good results. After all your cut outs are bonded in place allow to dry completely and apply sealer(Mod Podge, Fast Finish or one of your choice) according to the direction on the bottle. I prefer to do multiple coats of sealer allowing it dry completely between coats.

This is a simple Trinket Box using only one image. This one will be for sale in my shops soon, along with others featuring my photography and images.

Altered Art

To me it means taking something not normally used for visual arts and transforming into some form of personal self expression. It is in no way I knew idea, but it was only 5 or 6 years ago that I stumbled across my first piece of altered art. It was a altered book that a fellow scrap booker had made. It was simple a child’s board book turned into a scrape book for her daughters 2nd birthday. It created an explosion of ideas in my mind and barely any of them scrap booking. I am not one for destroying a written work of art, having a great love for words and writings, but I could already see my emotions visually splattered out in the form of an altered book. So off I went to find a book that would suit my purpose. Checking second hand stores and I found a few.

I made pages and mini books dedicated to poems that deeply move me and stir my soul, I made some that simply were filled with raw emotions I felt at the time. When I altered books and pages it is purely for me, I never intend to sell them and rarely show them to anyone… until now. These are a few years old now but here are a few examples.
These three are pages from my first altered book I did it has Emily Bronte's poem Shall Earth No More Inspire Thee There are more pages in this book. Have more I will post some other time that are more personal...... about my daily stresses and things like that.

I always see things I want to alter but time is so fleeting… isn’t it? Making Steampunk jewelry pieces helps me with this desire. To me it is the current altered art form I can relate to. Victorian style mixed with fantasy, science fiction and mechanical. Here is my most recent Steampunk piece.

WooHoo I found my Booth Buddy for The Big Thaw! She owns the shop Am&a-Whimsical Arts and Crafts
and she will be selling hand made hula hoops and healing comfrey salve, I am very excited now! So much planning and creating new product….. After all a bare table would be no good, lol.

I finally got out with my camera the other morning. It was a great morning for it to! There was a winter fog hovering around the river. The cloud itself was a great capture but it also created a sparkling thick frost on everything within the frost area! Here are a few of my favorite shots. All of these are avalible as prints as with all my photography for prices and more photography visit my site Kindred Images and Creations

Sharing is caring

Looking for someone to share my spot, if I get one! My application and check have been sent in. But the applications are pouring in(that’s what I’ve been told) for The Big Thaw in April and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will get in. If I do it will be my first craft fair, very scaring and exciting. Since space is very limiting I would love to share! I think that it will increase the chances of getting in since it is a two for one deal and I would love to have someone there to chat and sell with. Sadly being the recluse I tend to be I do not have many crafty friends. Maybe this will be my chance to open up a bit to the local crafting community and friend a few local artisans.

A Few collections

I do love putting together Collections and Treasurys on Artfire and Etsy. I wish Etsy treasury's were as easy to put together as the Artfire collection. Not that it is hard on Etsy but Artfire makes it way more simple and quicker. So here are a few Artfire collections I put together today one featuring members of the Blogger Unite Guild(which I am co-Master of, so if you are on artfire and love to blog come join us) and the other features members from the Jewelry Creators Unite in Numbers Guild!
